Apartment Sweet Apartment

If you are pining for the good old days in the '80s, you will LOVE our apartment.  Hopefully the "after" pictures are better than the "before", but only you can be the judge of that.

Before:
Two of the four wall decorations in the whole apartment
The third decorator item
And last but not least
But the message written on the back of the horse picture redeems it: "Sometimes the thing holding you back is all in your head."

More challenges
And more
Don't touch the lampshade on the left....it's hanging on by a thread. Literally!

Too many choices. Please help me decide on the best combination.  (Everything in the next pictures was already in the apartment--except for the sage green pillows pictured below & the Navajo wall hanging):

This?.
How about pillows snitched from the couch?

Ummmm.....probably not

How does this grab you?
Or this?
Maybe this?
Come on--you're running out of choices!

Every time I visit with one of our neighbors, I inherit some of their hand me downs. I'm not too proud to scrounge, but your dad rolls his eyes whenever I burst through the door with a new find.  I am determined  not to spend money on an apartment with an "eighteen-month lease".

And then there are the storage closets in the basement!  They are better than Goodwill since stuff is FREE! Again, your dad rolls his eyes.  But  I HAVE to decorate consistent with the '80s theme to keep it authentic.

After:

Are you ready?

Fall decor on tables, leaf garland on the balcony railing, and picture frame courtesy of the downstairs storage closets. Picture of Christ purchased from the neighborhood LDS bookstore: "This Is The Place".  Notice the lovely floral decor on the lamps is missing.  Just turn the lamp around, and there you have it--a new lamp.

Below: Pumpkins courtesy of basement storage room. Wall hanging from our trip to the Grand Canyon in August. Yes, we know, there are too many recliners for even one neighborhood, but we have to work with what we are given.

Below: Washington D.C. Temple picture: courtesy of Sister Plummer. Don't tell, but she kifed it from the basement wall and handed it to me. Family Proclamation picture courtesy of  Sister Bleak.  We brought the Salt Lake Temple picture from Portland.

Below: My favorite basement storage find. I had to pry a gigantic pine cone out of the vase part and replace it with the flowers. I think it's my favorite because it reminds me of Laurel.  She's totally in love with pilgrim figurines.

Below: Table centerpiece courtesy of Sister Bleak. Wall decor courtesy of basement storage.  Mirror original to the apartment.

Below: Cute bowls and "Home Sweet Home" plate found after digging through the kitchen cabinets. The small table used to be my nightstand until Sister Bruggeman donated an end table to the cause, which has become my current nightstand.

Below: The picture is pretty garish, but the frame has possibilities, anyway by 1980 standards.

Not too bad, is it?  The frame, silly!

The below ensemble is my pick. It was created by putting two black twin sheets together to make a bed skirt.  The black shams are the couch cushions covered with the black pillow cases which go with the black twin sheets. Pretty racy, if you ask me!

Below: Picture courtesy of Sister Payne.

Below: Picture courtesy of Sister Bleak. Flower arrangement and picture frame courtesy of downstairs storage. Cute family courtesy of cute family!

The remaining rooms:

Below: Flower arrangement courtesy of Sister Bleak -- I think.  I forget.

So there you have it.  Approximately twenty trips to the basement storage units and many visits to neighbors later, we feel like it's home.  I know I've spent too much time focusing on decorating, but with the temple closed, what else am I supposed to do?

Problem is, I will have to start decorating from scratch when fall is over.  I have already hoarded a few Christmas items, but so have other sisters, so I don't feel too selfish.

I almost forgot to show the front door decor.  It changes daily.

Washington D.C. Temple or Bust

We really weren't going to have a blog this time around, but old habits die hard. And we REALLY should have known better than to turn Laurel loose to set up our new blog! Funny girl.

Monday, September 14 - Wednesday, September 16,  2015

We had been talking about these three days for months!  Can't believe they actually happened.

Our three-day temple trainers were Brother and Sister Walker -  Sister Walker being one of President Hinckley's daughters. We heard some great inside stories about President Hinckley from her.

There were twenty couples and and a few single sisters in our group.  Collectively, we have left 627 children, grandchildren, and greats behind.  As a group, we were able to attend an endowment session, complete some initiatories and sealings.  The Spirit of the Temple was overwhelming.

I'm really sorry we didn't document our last family event in Natalie and Dave's home on Wednesday night..  But we are glad we had this picture taken  the Sunday before our training started. What an incredible family.  We love all of you dearly. We miss you,  think of you, and pray for all of you daily.

Oh, yoohoo, Camille, where are you?

Then it was off to Richfield to spend the night.

Thursday, September 17, 2015

As we  traveled from Richfield  to Denver, I couldn't resist taking pictures of our beautiful state.  It was then that I realized we needed to create another mission blog.

Enjoy:

Packed to the hilt - Don't open any doors!

"Look at the clouds....no one's looking at the clouds!" (Sorry, Nana.)

Then:

The aspens were just starting to turn yellow

Thursday evening we attended the Denver Temple. It is a beautiful temple and so is the Spirit.

Friday, September 18, 2015

As we left the Colorado Rockies Friday morning, the sky was so gorgeous, it was a perfect photo opp.

Later on that morning:

No reason to post any more pictures of Kansas.  It's all the same....but wait!

I'm just a foreigner to Kansas, but doesn't this look like FIVE tornadoes developing?

"Faster, Gary, Faster!"

Don't quote me, but that's a MOTHER of a tornado! (It's a good thing you didn't quote me.)

A beautiful ending to a lovely day: attending the Kansas City Temple.

Saturday, September 19, 2015

Our trip is starting to be a big blur, so bear with me. That's what I get for waiting so long to publish.

Ok, so this shot looks too perfect. I'll admit, I snitched it from Google Images.
But isn't the above shot better than this?

Or this?

I think this is the Missouri River:

And just maybe this is the Mississippi River. Anyway, the bridge is very lovely, don't you think?

Then on to:

The only proof we were in Illinois:

Maybe this is better proof:  Of course anything can be copied off Google Images.  For all you know, we are in the Bahamas on an extended vacation.

Enjoy the following pictures of beautiful Illinois.

Are you bored yet? I know I was.  Poor Gary had to keep on keepin' on, while I sewed, read, and slept.

Friday afternoon we arrived in

And attended the beautiful Louisville Temple

We met a brother who was influential in bringing the Louisville Temple into existence.  He faced many challenges, including: city codes that wouldn't allow for the temple to be built on the existing property, sewer permits, an adjoining contrary neighbor that caused much havoc, deadlines, and a host of other problems.  But he and others were able to conquer.  The temple was built and dedicated in record time: one year and four days.... March 2005.

Sunday, September 20, 2015

We attended Church in Louisville and stayed the night somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains (in a motel, of course.)

Monday, September 21, 2015

The excitement is starting to build.  Next stop, Kensington, Maryland. A five-hour trip and we are there!

Cute country scenes in the Appalachians:

And more green scenes

Then:

More beautiful scenery:

A little bit of fall colors

Never did see a "Welcome to Maryland" sign! Thank you Google Images!

Wahoo! Our first glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel.

Getting closer!

And closer!

And closer!

Last chance to bail!

But who would want to bail with such an impressive welcoming party waiting for our arrival?

And besides being a great welcoming party, being such great helpful neighbors.

Below: Brother Payne (and Sister Payne) were our host couple. They went above and beyond to make us feel welcome.

In less than ten minutes of unloading the car,

smiles and introductions

and hugs from Relief Society President Sister Plummer,

"Here she comes! Brace yourself!" What a cute lady!
we were in our new home-away-from home.

Our sweet next-door neighbor: Sister Hollingshaus
